The Near-ir Ca Ii Triplet - Σ Relation for Bulges of Spiral Galaxies
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present measurements of the near-infrared Calcium II triplet (CaT, CaT), Paschen (PaT) and Magnesium (Mg I) indices for a well-studied sample of 19 bulges of early to intermediate spiral galaxies. We find that both the CaT and CaT indices decrease with central velocity dispersion σ with small scatter. This dependence is similar to that recently found by Cenarro (2002) for elliptical galaxies, implying an uniform CaT – σ relation that applies to galaxies from ellipticals to intermediate-type spirals. The decrease of CaT and CaT with σ contrasts with the well-known increase of another α-element index, Mg2, with σ. We discuss the role of Ca underabundance ([Ca/Fe]<0) and IMF variations in the onset of the observed relations. Limits on the Mass of the Central Black Hole in Sixteen Nearby Bulges1
We report upper limits on the masses of black holes that can be present in the centers of sixteen nearby galaxy bulges. These limits Mlim BH for our statistically complete sample were derived from the modeling of the central emission-line widths ([N II] or [S II]), observed over a 0.′′25× 0.2 (R <∼ 9 pc) aperture. The experiment has a mean detection sensitivity of ∼ 3.9×106 M⊙. For three sample...

We have found that the bulge of the large, nearby Sb galaxy NGC 7331 rotates retrograde to its disk. Analysis of spectra in the region of the near-IR Ca II triplet along the major axis shows that, in the radial range between 5 and ∼20, the line of sight velocity distribution of the absorption lines is has two distinct peaks, and can be decomposed into a fast-rotating component with v/σ > 3, and...

متن کاملA near Infrared Photometric Plane for Ellipticals and Bulges of Spirals
We report the existence of a single plane in the space of global photometric parameters describing elliptical galaxies and the bulges of early type spiral galaxies. The three parameters which define the plane are obtained by fitting the Sersic form to the brightness distribution obtained from near-infrared K band images. We find, from the range covered by their shape parameters, that the ellipt...
متن کاملMeasuring Stellar Velocity Dispersions in Active Galaxies
We present stellar velocity dispersion (σ∗) measurements for a significant sample of 40 broad-line (Type 1) active galaxies for use in testing the well-known relation between black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion. The objects are selected to contain Ca II triplet, Mg Ib triplet, and Ca H+K stellar absorption features in their optical spectra so that we may use them to perform extensiv...
